Always check your casting material is compatible with your mould. If it is not, a sealant or release agent may be required.
Popular Casting Materials:
| Plaster | Quick and simple process. Inexpensive. Compatible with most mould materials. |
| Ceramic slips | Used in plaster moulds. Requires firing. |
| Clear casting resins | Used in plaster moulds. Requires firing. |
| Polyester resins | Versatile and can take various stone and metal fillers. Can be used with fibreglass mat to make strong lightweight casts. Can crack during curing in large sections. |
| Polyurethane Resins | Can get very fast curing versions. Can be used with fillers. Can react with certain moulds. |
| Epoxy Resins | Very high strength. Can cure in shallow sections. Can be used to varnish paintings and drawings. |
| Polyurethane foams | Very lightweight. Expand many times to fill moulds. React with certain moulds and moisture. |
| Acrylic casting plasters | Similar properties to plaster, but much stronger. Can be used with fibreglass matting. Non-toxic. |
| Bio resins | Environmentally sound. Similar curing properties to PU resins. Can react with some moulds. Non-toxic. |
